The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases globally surpassed 11 million mark on Saturday as various countries recorded their highest 24 hours surge, including India, US, South Africa and Mexico. As per the latest figures by John Hopkins University, the infections tally reached 11,045,713, while the death toll was at 523,898.
In the United States, Covid-19 cases rose 2.1%, higher than the seven-day average, with more than 57,000 infections in 24 hours. The rising numbers have triggered authorities to to impose mandatory face masks rule and in some states, a curfew.
All of this comes as US entered somber Fourth of July weekend, US Independence Day. People are urged to celebrate their independence at home with their families.

Brazil the second most affected country from Covid-19 after the US, recorded 42,223 cases within 24-hours and surpassed 1.5 million mark.
Meanwhile, India which is at the fourth spot of the ten worst-affected countries on John Hopkins tally, recorded steepest single-day spike with 22,700 Covid-19 cases, pushing the tally to 648,315 on Saturday.
The southern state, Tamil Nadu became the second state in India to cross the grim milestone of a million cases, with a total of 102,721 people infected with Covid-19 disease.

Prithviraj Chavan questions ICMR plans for vaccine by Aug 15
Congress leader Prithviraj Chavanalleged on Saturday that the ICMR's plans to launch a coronavirus vaccine by August 15 was aimed only at enabling the prime minister to make a big announcement from the Red Fort.
The Indian Council of Medical Research said on Friday that it aims to launch the world's first Covid-19 vaccine by August 15.
Kolkata to have no flights from six cities from July 6-19
Flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Chennai and Ahmedabad will not land in Kolkata till July 19, authorities said on Saturday as the West Bengal government stepped up efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease.
Pay ₹50 fine in Bihar for not wearing mask at offices, public places
The Bihar government has decided to impose a fine of ₹50 on people found not wearing face masks at offices and public places.
A notification issued by the state health department to this effect on July 3, under the 'Bihar Epidemic Diseases COVID-19 Regulation 2020', also said that people flouting the norm would be given two masks free of cost to motivate them to wear face covers.

In another single-day spike, South Africa reported 9,064 cases of Covid-19 infections on Saturday. The total number has now risen to more than 177,000.
According to a report by Associated Press, thirty per cent of South Africa’s total cases are now in Gauteng province, which contains Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria.
Australia: 3,000 people under hard lockdown as cases continue to surge
Australia’s Victoria state recorded 108 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, forcing authorities to lock down nine public housing towers and three more Melbourne suburbs.
Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said 3,000 people in the housing towers will go into “hard lockdown,” meaning “there will be no one allowed in ... and no one allowed out.”
Residents in the Flemington and Kensington housing units will receive deliveries of food and medicine, along with alcohol support. (AP)

As Covid-19 cases crossed 1.5 million mark on Saturday, Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro approved a law requiring masks on streets and in public transportation to help prevent the rapidly spreading infection.
New York state reports 918 new coronavirus infections
New York state reported 918 new coronavirus infections and nine deaths, Governor Andrew Cuomo said.
It's the first time more than 900 new infections have been reported since June 12, when 916 people tested positive for the virus statewide.
