The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases globally surpassed 11 million mark on Saturday as various countries recorded their highest 24 hours surge, including India, US, South Africa and Mexico. As per the latest figures by John Hopkins University, the infections tally reached 11,045,713, while the death toll was at 523,898.

In the United States, Covid-19 cases rose 2.1%, higher than the seven-day average, with more than 57,000 infections in 24 hours. The rising numbers have triggered authorities to to impose mandatory face masks rule and in some states, a curfew.

All of this comes as US entered somber Fourth of July weekend, US Independence Day. People are urged to celebrate their independence at home with their families.

Brazil the second most affected country from Covid-19 after the US, recorded 42,223 cases within 24-hours and surpassed 1.5 million mark.

Meanwhile, India which is at the fourth spot of the ten worst-affected countries on John Hopkins tally, recorded steepest single-day spike with 22,700 Covid-19 cases, pushing the tally to 648,315 on Saturday.

The southern state, Tamil Nadu became the second state in India to cross the grim milestone of a million cases, with a total of 102,721 people infected with Covid-19 disease.

Jammu and Kashmir reports 227 new virus cases, 8 deaths

As many as eight deaths and 227 new coronavirus cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir in last 24 hours, said the health department. The total number of cases in the Union Territory now stands at 8,246, reports ANI.

Bihar registers over 11,000 Covid-19 cases, death toll at 88

The Covid-19 death toll in Bihar reached 88 with four more fatalities, while 349 new infections pushed the case tally to 11,456, state health department said on Saturday. A health department release said one Covid-19 death each was reported from Patna, Bhagalpur, Kishanganj and Samastipur districts, reports PTI.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar tests negative for Covid-19, reports ANI

News agency ANI reported that Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has tested negative for the novel coronavirus. Kumar got himself tested for the virus after he attended in which a BJP leader, who was later found COVID-19 positive, also took part.

Rajasthan’s Covid-19 count nears 20K with record spike of 480 cases

Rajasthan reported 480 infections, its highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases so far, on Saturday, taking the virus count to 19,532 in the state, according to an official report.

Seven more people died due to the infection in the state, raising the death toll to 447, the report said.
