The nationwide case count in India has now reached 99,79,447. The number of active cases stands at 3,13, 831, while 95,20,827 patients have been cured or discharged from hospitals. The country also recorded 338 fresh fatalities due to the disease which pushed the nationwide death toll to 1,44,789.

The world Covid-19 caseload is nearing 75 million cases, as per the latest updates by Johns Hopkins University. The US continues to be the worst-affected country by the pandemic with the tally surging past 17 million. The caseload currently stands at 17,206,647 and 310,699 patients succumbing to Covid-19 across the country. US has so far cleared two vaccine candidates for emergency use, hoping to reign in the pandemic.

China to soon begin Covid-19 vaccination drive by inoculating frontline workers

China is scheduled to start inoculation drives for the country's front-line workers in health care, transport, and border control, vice minister of the national health commission Zeng Yixin told the Associated Press. The Chinese government had previously vaccinated millions of citizens and frontline workers using indigenous vaccines, before the market approval of the vaccines came through.

Slovakian PM tests Covid-19 positive, a week after attending the same summit as the French President

Slovakian Prime Minister Igor Matovic has tested positive for the coronavirus a week after attending a European Union summit in Brussels. The same summit where President Emmanuel Macron is believed to have caught the virus, reported AFP. Slovakia is all set to receive its first delivery of vaccines on December 26 following which inoculations are scheduled to start.

With 25,152 Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, India's infection tally over 10 million; death toll at 145,136

India's total coronavirus count surpassed 10 million on Saturday, according to the data published by the union health ministry. The country currently has 308751 active cases, while 9550712 have been discharged so far. 347 individuals also succumbed to the infection pushing the death toll to 145,136.

WHO's team of experts to travel to Wuhan in January

World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that a team of international expert will travel to Wuhan to look into the origins of the coronavirus, according to the Associated Press. WHO's head of emergencies also told AP that the team will not be "supervised" by Chinese officials but will work in collaboration with their "Chinese colleagues".

Italy to be placed under lockdown for Christmas and New Year holidays to help curb coronavirus surge

The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Friday that Italy will be placed under a nation-wide lockdown for Christmas and New Year to prevent a surge in coronavirus cases. Under the new rules, non-essential shops will be closed between December 24-27, December 31- January 3 and January 5-6. All bars and restaurants will remain closed throughout the holiday season.

Mexico has reported 12, 248 news cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours

Mexico recorded 12, 248 new cases of the coronavirus (Covid-19) on Friday, taking the cumulative total to 1,301,546. 762 fatalities were also reported in that time period, pushing the total death toll to 117,249, according to the country's health ministry.
