Donald Trump began his address at the Motera stadium with a Namaste. The US president also said that it is a great honour to be in India. The US President said that he was thankful to his "great friend Modi" to according a "beautiful welcome".

"The meaning of the name of the event 'Namaste' is very deep. This is a word from the oldest languages of the world - Sanskrit. It means that we pay respect to not only to the person but also to the divinity inside him," said PM Modi at 'Namaste Trump' event.

"India-US relations are no longer just another partnership. It is a far greater and closer relationship. One is 'land of the free' the other believes the world is one family. One feels proud of 'statue of liberty' the other feels proud of 'statue of unity'," said PM Modi at 'Namaste Trump' event.

PM Modi kicked off the 'Namaste Trump' event with 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' chants. The Prime Minister said that US President has begun a "historic visit".

The US President arrived at the venue with Elton John being played in the background at the Motera stadium.

Amid tight security, US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a 22-km roadshow in Ahmedabad. After a brief stopover at Sabarmati Ashram, the Trumps and the Prime Minister headed to the Motera stadium.

The Motera stadium will officially open for business today when US President Donald Trump inaugurates the venue on the banks of the Sabarmati.

The Sardar Patel Stadium -- or Motera, as it is simply known -- was first built in 1982 when the state government of Gujarat donated 50 acres of land for its construction. So far, Motera has held one T20I (Pakistan’s final international on Indian soil, played back in 2012), 12 Test matches and 24 ODIs -- the last of which, between India and Sri Lanka in November 2014, was also the final game it hosted before it closed for reconstruction.

Trump will be feted at a huge reception in a 1,10,000-seat cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. A huge crowd has filled the stadium, the world's biggest cricket ground.

Indian-American politician Nikki Haley has said that there is much to be gained from the friendship of US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The US and India are the two largest democracies in the world and share many values. There is much to be gained by the friendship of Modi and Trump," the top Republican leader said in a tweet.

At Ahmedabad Ashram, the Trumps tried their hand on spinning the 'charkha'. Trump and first lady Melania Trump removed their shoes before entering the ashram for a tour personally led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump signed the guest book, referring to Modi as “my great friend” and thanking him for a “wonderful visit.”

US President Trump, First Lady Melania and PM Modi has arrived at Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. Trump is expected to spend about 15 minutes at the ashram.

Minutes after Trump's India touchdown, the government said the "first stand-alone visit by a US President to India exemplifies a historic relationship."

"This is the first stand-alone visit by a US President to India, exemplifying a historic relationship that has matured into a 21century global partnership," tweeted MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar.

Donald Trump and PM Narendra Modi on Monday embarked on a 22-km- long roadshow from the Ahmedabad International Airport.

Trump, who is on a two-day India visit, landed at the Airport at 11.37 am.

US President Donald Trump has left the Ahmedabad airport for the iconic Sabarmati Ashram. Three chairs have been set up under a tree on the Sabarmati riverside for Trump, the first lady and Modi. Trump is expected to spend about 15 minutes at the ashram, going round the complex and visiting the humble home in which Mahatma Gandhi lived.

Dancers and artists were present at the airport and several of them lined the road US President's cavalcade was travelling by to accord a colourful welcome to the Trumps.
