The fourth phase of nationwide lockdown to stop the spread of the coronavirus disease Covid-19 begins today and will continue till May 31. However, many of the stringent restrictions that were in place till now have been lifted including that on interstate and intrastate travel. The Centre has also allowed states governments to grade zones based on the prevalence of Covid-19 cases.

In fresh guidelines, the home ministry also allowed the resumption of app-based cab services; gave permission to the functioning of all shops, markets and commercial establishments except those in malls; and eased curbs on private offices that were previously allowed to function with 33% staff strength. However, Metro services and air travel, will still not be allowed.
Globally, the coronavirus has killed at least 313,611 people and infected at least 4,680,700, according to an AFP tally based on official sources.

Prohibitory orders extended till May 19 in Bengaluru
Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Monday extended the prohibitory orders under Section 144 (1) till May 19 in the city in order to contain the Covid-19 spread, reports ANI.
Bengaluru city is classified under the red zone.

In highest one-day spike, India records 5,242 new Covid-19 cases
India has recorded the biggest spike in the number of Covid-19 cases, registering over 5,000 new infections in 24 hours. The death toll went up by 157 in the same period. According to the Union health ministry figures released on Monday morning, the total coronavirus cases in the country stand at 96,169. This includes 56,316 active cases, 3029 deaths and 36,823 cured patients.
China reports 25 new coronavirus cases
China has reported 25 new Covid-19 patients, health officials said on Monday, as 14 asymptomatic cases were detected in Wuhan, the first epicentre of the coronavirus, taking the number of such infections in the city to 337, the highest in the country, reports PTI.
The death toll in China remained at 4,634 on Sunday with no new fatalities reported.

The number of global coronavirus cases has increased to over 4.7 million, while the death toll has surpassed 315,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University, reports IANS.
As of Monday morning, the total number of cases stood at 4,713,620, while the death toll increased to 315,185, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

China reports seven new Covid-19 cases
China reported seven new confirmed coronavirus cases for May 17, up from five a day earlier, the country's health authority said on Monday, reports Reuters.
Of the new cases, the northeastern province of Jilin, currently in a partial lockdown due to a flare-up in infections, reported two confirmed cases.
UK coronavirus death toll rises by 170, lowest increase since March
Britain's death toll due to Covid-19 rose by 170 to 34,636, business minister Alok Sharma said on Sunday, the lowest increase in the official death toll since March 24, reports Reuters.
The increase reported on Sunday was sharply down from the 468 rise in deaths reported 24 hours earlier and the lowest since Britain brought in a lockdown to curb the spread of the virus on March 23.
France's Covid-19 death toll passes 28,000
Deaths from the new coronavirus in France passed 28,000 Sunday, the health ministry announced, as officials tried to contain outbreaks in two abattoirs, reports AFP.
The latest daily toll, of 483, the largest in several weeks, was made up mainly of deaths in care homes: 429 deaths, compared to only 54 in hospital. Those numbers took France's total number of deaths from the virus to 28,108.
Japan's economy slips into recession
Japan dived into its first recession since 2015, according to official data Monday, with the world's third-largest economy contracting by 0.9 percent in the first quarter as it wrestles with the fallout from the coronavirus, reports AFP.
The drop in gross domestic product followed a 1.9-percent decline in the fourth quarter of 2019 as a tax hike and typhoons hit Japan hard -- even before the pandemic shut down much of the economy.
US records 820 new coronavirus deaths in 24 hours: Report
The United States on Sunday recorded 820 new coronavirus deaths in the previous 24 hours, but the country's total death count neared 90,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker, reports AFP.
The latest toll, marked at 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Monday), was the lowest since 776 daily deaths were recorded on May 10, but the count ranged as high as 1,894 in subsequent days.
