Covid-19 highlights: Maharashtra CM rules out relaxing restrictions in red zones

Lockdown 4.0 has come into force from Monday and will continue till May 31 to stop the Covid-19 from spreading. But, there have been many relaxations in the lockdown rules including allowing states to grade the zones.

The fourth phase of nationwide lockdown to stop the spread of the coronavirus disease Covid-19 begins today and will continue till May 31. However, many of the stringent restrictions that were in place till now have been lifted including that on interstate and intrastate travel. The Centre has also allowed states governments to grade zones based on the prevalence of Covid-19 cases.

In fresh guidelines, the home ministry also allowed the resumption of app-based cab services; gave permission to the functioning of all shops, markets and commercial establishments except those in malls; and eased curbs on private offices that were previously allowed to function with 33% staff strength. However, Metro services and air travel, will still not be allowed.

Globally, the coronavirus has killed at least 313,611 people and infected at least 4,680,700, according to an AFP tally based on official sources.

Karnataka to observe total lockdown on Sundays: CM

Karnataka allow state-buses to operate from Tuesday, except in red and containment zones.

"All four State transport corporation buses allowed to operate in Karnataka, except in red and containment zones, from Tuesday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, was quoted as saying by PTI.

The CM said, "(there'll be) strict lockdown measures in containment zones & economic activities will be permitted in other areas. Sundays will be total lockdown across state. Home quarantine will be strengthened, " reports ANI.

Fiscal stimulus 'totally inadequate': P Chidambaram

Former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram has criticised the Centre's economic package to deal with the economic crisis due to Covid-19.

"Fiscal stimulus is of 1,86,650 crore amounting to 0.91% of GDP; totally inadequate given the gravity of economic crisis," PTI quoted him as saying.

He added, "We note with deep regret that fiscal stimulus package has left several sections high and dry."

The package was announced in five tranches by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman last week.

Delhi reports 299 new Covid-19 cases, total crosses 10,000

Delhi reported 299 new Covid-19 positive cases reported in last 24 hrs,

according to ANI. There have been 283 recovered/discharged/migrated in the same period. However, no deaths reported in this duration.

The total number of positive cases in the national capital now stand at 10,054 -including 4485 recovered/discharged and 160 deaths.
