Countries around the world raced to develop a vaccine for coronavirus (Covid-19) as the pandemic continues to rage. Worldwide there are at least 21.5 million coronavirus cases and over 765,000 confirmed deaths.
The United States remained the global epicentre of the virus, with around a quarter of the cases and deaths.
According to figures published on John Hopkins' website, Covid-19 fatalities surpassed 170,000 in the US while the number of cases are more than 5.4 million.

Brazil, second worst affected nation after the US, confirmed more than 23,000 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours. While the death toll increased by over 600 fatalities.
Meanwhile, India eyed global front runners including UK’s Oxford-AstraZeneca and United States’s Moderna-NIAID in Covid-19 vaccine plan for possible acquisition discussions.
India’s cumulative coronavirus disease cases crossed the 2.64 million mark on Monday and the death toll from the viral pandemic reached 50,921.

US' CDC reports 169,350 deaths from coronavirus
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Monday said the number of deaths due to the new coronavirus had risen by 654 to 169,350 and reported 5,382,125 cases, an increase of 41,893 cases from its previous count, reports Reuters.
Decision on reopening gyms, hotels in Delhi likely on Tuesday
A decision on whether hotels, gymnasium and weekly markets should be allowed to reopen in Delhi is likely to be taken at a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority on Tuesday, reports PTI quoting officials.
South Africa opens as virus cases fall, allows liquor sales
South Africa, which imposed one of the world's strictest anti-coronavirus lockdowns five months ago, will significantly relax its restrictions Tuesday, including allowing the sales of liquor and cigarettes, as it appears the country has weathered its first peak of Covid-19 cases, reports AP.
With numbers of cases and hospitalisations declining, the country will further loosen its regulations to permit the opening of bars, restaurants, gyms, places of worship and entertainment, all with distancing restrictions. Schools will reopen gradually from August 24, starting with grades 12 and 7 and a phased opening of other grades.

West Bengal reports highest single-day spike of 3,080 cases
West Bengal's Covid19 tally rose to 1,19,578 with the highest single-day spike of 3,080 new cases on Monday, as per an official bulletin, reports PTI.
The toll increased to 2,473 as 45 more people died, the bulletin issued by the Health Department said.

Covid-19 negative certificate must for entering Haryana Assembly
Anyone entering Haryana Vidhan Sabha complex for the upcoming monsoon session will have to show a Covid-19 negative certificate, assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta said on Monday, reports PTI.
Additionally, “Made in China” sanitisers or masks will not be allowed on the premises, he said.

Maharashtra's Covid-19 tally past 6 lakh with 8,493 new cases
Maharashtra's Covid-19 tally rose to 604,358 on Monday with the state reporting 8,493 new cases in the past 24 hours. The death toll has gone up to 20,265 with 228 fatalities reported in the same period. According to the state health department, 11, 391 people recovered from the virus infection on Monday, taking the total recoveries to 428,514 while the total number of those tested till date is 32,06,248.
Over 2,200 vehicles challaned for flouting Covid-19 curbs in Noida
Two people were arrested and challans issued to owners of more than 2,200 vehicles across Noida and Greater Noida on Monday for allegedly violating curbs imposed due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Gautam Buddh Nagar police said.

Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam continues to be on life support: Hospital
Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam who is undergoing treatment at Chennai's MGM Healthcare following coronavirus diagnosis, continues to be on life support in ICU, the hospital on Monday said, reports ANI.
According to the health bulletin by the hospital, the singer continues to be in a critical condition.
