Countries around the world raced to develop a vaccine for coronavirus (Covid-19) as the pandemic continues to rage. Worldwide there are at least 21.5 million coronavirus cases and over 765,000 confirmed deaths.

The United States remained the global epicentre of the virus, with around a quarter of the cases and deaths.

According to figures published on John Hopkins' website, Covid-19 fatalities surpassed 170,000 in the US while the number of cases are more than 5.4 million.

Brazil, second worst affected nation after the US, confirmed more than 23,000 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours. While the death toll increased by over 600 fatalities.

Meanwhile, India eyed global front runners including UK’s Oxford-AstraZeneca and United States’s Moderna-NIAID in Covid-19 vaccine plan for possible acquisition discussions.

India’s cumulative coronavirus disease cases crossed the 2.64 million mark on Monday and the death toll from the viral pandemic reached 50,921.

Not averse to imposing stricter restrictions to check further Covid-19 spread: Punjab CM

17 prisoners in Dhanbad Divisional Jail test positive for Covid-19

As many as 17 inmates of Dhanbad Divisional Jail in Jharkhand have tested positive for novel coronavirus, an official said, reports PTI.

Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Dhanbad Raj Maheswaram said, rapid antigen tests were conducted on 76 prisoners on Sunday and 17 results came out positive.

Nepal's coronavirus cases cross 27,000-mark

Nepal's Covid-19 tally crossed 27,000-mark on Monday after 581 new coronavirus cases were reported across the country, a senior heath official has said, reports PTI.

Addressing a virtual press briefing, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population Jageshwar Gautam said that 581 people were found infected with Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 27,241.

Schools in Greece ready to reopen next month

Greece’s government spokesman says schools in the country are set to reopen on Sept. 7, according to an AP report.

Stelios Petsas said schools will face challenges making sure children adhere to measures such as maintaining social distance, frequently washing their hands and wearing masks where necessary.

Greek authorities have been alarmed by a significant increase in the number of daily coronavirus cases detected, with the numbers steadily over 200 for the past five days. Total confirmed cases now top 7,000, with 228 deaths.

Bathinda SSP tests positive for Covid-19

Bathinda senior superintendent of police (SSP) Bhupinder Jit Singh Virk and district Congress leader Khushbaz Singh Jattana tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday. Both of them were present at the district-level Independence Day function, where state finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal was the chief guest on Saturday.
