India’s count of cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) is at 9,499,413 after the Union health ministry on Wednesday reported 36,604 new infections in the preceding 24 hours. Phase 3 clinical trial of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, India’s first indigenous Covid-19 vaccine, meanwhile, started in two more states: Karnataka and West Bengal. Covaxin is India’s first Covid-19 vaccine to reach phase 3 trials; these trials are also the largest Covid-19 vaccine trials being conducted in India.

The United Kingdom on Wednesday became the first country to authorise a Covid-19 vaccine as it gave approvals for use of Pfizer-BioNTech SE’s vaccine candidate, before the United States and the rest of Europe. UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) granted emergency use approval to the vaccine candidate, which was found to be 95% effective in its clinical trials.

China orders inspections to prevent Covid-19 spread
China is carrying out sweeping inspections on food importers, supermarkets, e-commerce platforms and restaurants to prevent the spread of coronavirus through imported cold chain products, the country's market regulator said on Wednesday, reports Reuters.
