India has been showing a declining trend in the number of active coronavirus cases reported everyday. On Monday, the country reported 20,021 new Covid-19 cases and 279 fatalities, as per the Union health ministry. The active caseload of coronavirus remained below 3 lakh on Monday too. While the number of new cases in the country are declining, the Union home ministry on Monday extended the guidelines for surveillance, containment and caution against the virus till January 2021.
The extension of the existing guidelines against the coronavirus comes in the backdrop of the recently discovered new variant of the virus in the UK. Many who have returned from the UK have been reported to be coronavirus positive hence raising alarms.

More than 80 million people have been infected by the coronavirus worldwide. The surge in the number of coronavirus cases in Georgia, US has exhausted the healthcare facilities with more than 4,000 hospitalization. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data on Monday also showed that more than 2 million people have been administered with the coronavirus vaccine in the US, reported ANI.
Tamil Nadu records 957 new cases, 12 deaths
Tamil Nadu reported 957 new coronavirus, pushing the state's overall tally to 8,16,132. 12 new fatalities took the death toll to 12,092.

Number of visitors to Republic Day parade to be curtailed due to Covid-19
The number of visitors to the 2021 Republic Day parade will be curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Seating arrangements are to be made keeping social distancing norms in mind.
Five states and UTs account for 60% of total active cases
The Union Health Ministry said that 60% of all active coronavirus infections are from Maharashtra, Kerala, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Dr V K Paul, Member (Health), Niti Aayog, said that the majority of the Indian population was susceptible to infection by the coronavirus due to the cold weather. He said that the country must remain careful of the new variant making a run.

The ICMR's Director General said that it was important that too much pressure was not put on the virus since it would cause it to mutate. He recommended judicious use of therapies which would prove beneficial.

The Union Health Ministry said that a consortium of 10 govt labs across the country to do genome sequencing, called INSACOG, had been established. The labs belonged to ICMR, BioTech India, CSIR and the Health Ministry.

Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Government of India Prof K. Vijay Raghavan said that there was no evidence to support the hypothesis that the coronavirus vaccines would be ineffective against the variants found in the UK and South Africa.
