India has been showing a declining trend in the number of active coronavirus cases reported everyday. On Monday, the country reported 20,021 new Covid-19 cases and 279 fatalities, as per the Union health ministry. The active caseload of coronavirus remained below 3 lakh on Monday too. While the number of new cases in the country are declining, the Union home ministry on Monday extended the guidelines for surveillance, containment and caution against the virus till January 2021.
The extension of the existing guidelines against the coronavirus comes in the backdrop of the recently discovered new variant of the virus in the UK. Many who have returned from the UK have been reported to be coronavirus positive hence raising alarms.

More than 80 million people have been infected by the coronavirus worldwide. The surge in the number of coronavirus cases in Georgia, US has exhausted the healthcare facilities with more than 4,000 hospitalization. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data on Monday also showed that more than 2 million people have been administered with the coronavirus vaccine in the US, reported ANI.
UK registers record 53,135 new cases
The UK registered its highest single day spike of coronavirus infections with 53,135 new cases.
Jharkhand reports 230 new cases, five deaths
Jharkhand reported 230 new coronavirus infections, taking the state's tally to 1,14,650. The death toll after five new fatalities stands at 1,025.

Himachal Pradesh reports 214 new cases
Himachal Pradesh reported 214 new coronavirus infections, taking the state's tally to 54,894. The death toll currently stands at 913.

BMC quarantines 361 international passengers in Mumbai
"664 passengers arrived from Europe and Middle East yesterday of which 361 were quarantined at Mumbai and 254 were sent to other States. 49 of them were exempted from institutional quarantine," the BMC said.
34 international passengers sampled: Chandigarh Health Department
"Out of the 95 passengers under surveillance, 35 arrived in India in Chandigarh between 9th-23rd Dec. Out of these one has gone back to US. All the remaining 34 have been sampled. Out of these 25 are negative by RT-PCR. Result of the remaining 9 is awaited," the Chandigarh Health Department said.

The national capital recorded 703 new coronavirus infections, taking its tally to 6,24,118. The death toll after 28 new fatalities stands at 10,502.

Uttarakhand extends Covid guidelines until January 31
The Uttarakhand government has extended coronavirus until January 31 saying, "In view of fresh surge in cases globally & emergence of new variant of virus in the United Kingdom, there is need to maintain caution & strict surveillance."
