While the rate of Covid-19 infections showed no sign of slowing down, the global number of infection surged past 15 million on Wednesday, as per the figures published by John Hopkins University.
The top five countries with the most cases include Brazil, India, Russia and South Africa and the United States topping the list by accounting for more than half the world’s infections and half its deaths.

The Covid-19 cases continued to soar in Kerala breaching the grim 1,000 mark for the second straight day on Thursday, taking the tally past the 16,000 mark with the state government saying the option of a complete lockdown again to manage the situation cannot be ruled out.

Tripura registered its ninth Covid-19 fatality after a 76-year-old woman succumbed to the disease here, while 126 fresh cases pushed the state's tally to 3,469, an official said on Thursday.
2,529 new Covid-19 positive cases in UP
As many as 2,529 new Covid-19 positive cases were reported in the Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, Principal Health Secretary Amit Mohan Prasad said.
The number of total active cases now stands at 21,003, while the death toll is at 1,298.

South Africa witnessed some 17,000 extra deaths from natural causes or 59% more than would normally be expected between early May and mid-July, scientists said, suggesting many more people are dying of Covid-19 than shown in official figures.
New data by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), released overnight, showed that just in the week to July 14 - the latest figures available - there was an excess of 5,022 deaths by natural causes, about half more than usual.
