According to the ministry of health and family welfare's dashboard, India on Thursday registered its highest ever single day spike of nearly 67,000 cases which has taken the overall tally to nearly 2.4 million. 942 deaths in the last 24 hours have taken the country's death toll to over 47,000. The country's recovery rate from the infection has crossed 70%. The daily recoveries have been seeing an upward trend with the first week of July recording 15,000 recovered cases on an average which further increased to at least 50,000 in the first week of August.
Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Bihar continue to remain severely hit from the pandemic. Bihar, which is also battling floods, has logged more than 90,000 Covid-19 cases so far. At 9,180 tests per million, the state has the lowest testing rate in the country.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also massively affected economies across the globe. Britain's economy shrank by a record 20.4% in the second quarter when lockdown restrictions were at the most stringent level and the world's sixth biggest economy has entered into recession. This is the most severe contraction reported by any major economy so far.

San Diego County started operating a coronavirus testing site Wednesday at the US-Mexico border, believed to be the first of its kind. The walk-up, no appointment site at the San Ysidro Port of Entry PedEast crossing will offer free tests and will focus on testing essential workers who cross the international border daily and American citizens who live in Tijuana, Mexico, reports AP.
Covid-19 pandemic threatens peace and risks new conflicts, says UN chief
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Wednesday that the Covid-19 pandemic not only threatens gains in fighting global poverty and building peace but risks exacerbating existing conflicts and generating new ones. The UN chief told a Security Council meeting on the challenge of sustaining peace during the pandemic that his March 23 call for an immediate cease-fire in conflicts around the world to tackle the coronavirus led a number of warring parties to take steps to de-escalate and stop fighting, reports AP.
