According to the ministry of health and family welfare's dashboard, India on Thursday registered its highest ever single day spike of nearly 67,000 cases which has taken the overall tally to nearly 2.4 million. 942 deaths in the last 24 hours have taken the country's death toll to over 47,000. The country's recovery rate from the infection has crossed 70%. The daily recoveries have been seeing an upward trend with the first week of July recording 15,000 recovered cases on an average which further increased to at least 50,000 in the first week of August.
Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Bihar continue to remain severely hit from the pandemic. Bihar, which is also battling floods, has logged more than 90,000 Covid-19 cases so far. At 9,180 tests per million, the state has the lowest testing rate in the country.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also massively affected economies across the globe. Britain's economy shrank by a record 20.4% in the second quarter when lockdown restrictions were at the most stringent level and the world's sixth biggest economy has entered into recession. This is the most severe contraction reported by any major economy so far.

Siddaramaiah discharged from hospital
A day after testing negative for Covid-19, Karanataka's former chief minister Siddaramaiah was discharged from the hospital on Thursday.
He was undergoing Covid-19 treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru.

40 Tamil Nadu cops donate plasma after recovering from Covid-19
As many as 40 Tamil Nadu policemen who recovered from Covid-19, have donated plasma, state health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar said on Thursday.
"Till now, 76 persons have donated plasma and 89 patients have benefitted from it. Today, 40 Covid-19 recovered police personnel donated plasma. Our state has the highest number of plasma banks in the country," he said while addressing the media.

Hong Kong reports 69 new coronavirus cases as local transmissions stay high
Hong Kong registered 69 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, out of which which 65 were locally transmitted. Since late January, more than 4,200 people have been infected in Hong Kong, 65 of whom have died, reports Reuters.
Odisha registers highest ever single-day spike of nearly 2,000 cases; state tally at 52,653
1,981 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Odisha, taking the total number of cases in the state to 52,653. Nine more people died, which pushed the state's death toll to 314. More than 36,000 people have recovered from the infection so far, reports PTI.
Germany’s new Covid-19 cases up most in more than three months
Germany recorded the highest number of new coronavirus infections in more than three months, with daily infections staying above 1,000 for three consecutive days. There were 1,319 new infections in the 24 hours, the most since May 1 and bringing the total to 220,859, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, reports Bloomberg.
Russia’s Covid-19 tally crosses 907,000; death toll over 15,000
Russia reported 5,057 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, bringing its nationwide tally to 907,758, the fourth largest caseload in the world. Russia's coronavirus taskforce said 124 people had died over the last 24 hours, pushing its official death toll to 15,384, reports Reuters.
