The ongoing monsoon session of Parliament has entered its ninth day. On Monday, eight opposition MPs were suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the monsoon session for disorderly conduct during protests against two controversial farm bills on Sunday.
On Tuesday morning, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh met the protesting MPs and offered them tea which they refused. The chairman also decided to observe one-day fast against the unruly behaviour with him by these MPs. In a letter to vice president Venkaiah Naidu, who is also the chairperson of the Upper House, he said he was ‘unable to sleep’ for two nights due to Sunday’s unprecedented chaos in the House.
Meanwhile, Leader of opposition and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Nabi Azad said that suspension of eight MPs who protested against the farm bills should be restored.
The opposition today will oppose three upcoming labour reforms- The Occupational Safety, Health And Working Conditions Code, 2020, The Industrial Relations Code, 2020 and the Code on Social Security 2020 which will be tabled by union labour minister Santosh Gangwar.
The occupational safety, health and working conditions bill sets standards for health and safety norms for organizations; the Industrial relations bill talks about the scope of trade unions and the code on social security aims to create a network of social security for all workers.
