The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Sunday asked ministries, departments of Government of India, state governments and state authorities to continue Covid-19 lockdown measures till May 31. PM Narendra Modi, in his address earlier this week, said that this phase of the lockdown will be very different in nature “with new rules”.
This comes on a day when India recorded the highest single-day spike in Covid-19 infections with 4,987 new cases in the last 24 hours as the national tally crossed the 90,000-mark, according to the Union health ministry.
Meanwhile, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman today announced the fifth tranche of Centre's ₹20 lakh crore fiscal stimulus package which attempts to cushion the economy reeling under the effect of coronavirus and the lockdown situation in the country.

Global Covid-19 cases top 4.6 mn, infections cross 311,000: Report
The overall number of global coronavirus cases has increased to over 4.6 million, while the death toll has surpassed 311,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University, reports news agency IANS.
As of Sunday morning, the total number of cases stood at 4,634,068, while the death toll increased to 311,781, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

France says coronavirus death toll rises to 27,625
French health authorities reported 96 new coronavirus deaths on Saturday, as the country eases from a two month lockdown, reports Reuters.
In a statement, the health ministry said the figure had fallen slightly from 104 fatalities on Friday. This brings France's total to 27,625.

Assam's Covid-19 tally nears 100
Assam's Covid-19 tally stands at 95. State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said early on Sunday that one boy from Sibsagar tested positive for Covid-19.
"One young boy from Sibsagar test #COVID19 positive. He is at present in our Jorhat Quarantine Centre. Total cases stand at 95 in Assam," Sarma said on Twitter.
US adds 1,237 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours: Report
The United States recorded 1,237 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing its grim total to 88,730, according to the latest real-time tally Saturday reported by Johns Hopkins University, reports AFP.
The country -- hardest hit by the pandemic in terms of the number of fatalities -- has now confirmed a total of 1,466,682 cases, the Baltimore-based school reported.
Brazil overtakes Spain to be world’s fourth-most infected nation
Brazil's COVID-19 death toll passed 15,000 on Saturday, official data showed, while its number of infections topped 230,000, making it the country with the fourth-highest number of cases in the world, reports AFP.
With 15,633 deaths and 233,142 confirmed cases, Brazil -- whose president Jair Bolsonaro has dismissed the disease as a "little flu" -- is at the epicenter of infections in Latin America.
Brazil has now overetaken Spain as the nation with the world’s fourth-highest number of confirmed Covid-19 patients.
