Covid-19 cases in India have surpassed the 1.85 million mark while the toll has risen to 38,938.

As of Tuesday, there were 586,298 active cases in the country while 1,230,509 people have recovered from the coronavirus disease, according to the Union ministry of health and family welfare’s dashboard.

Bringing hope, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) director-general Balram Bhargava said that three of India’s Covid-19 vaccine candidates are progressing well. He said that phase II/III clinical trials for the recombinant Oxford University vaccine candidate will begin within a week at 17 sites across the country.

The global virus tally has soared past 18.45 million while the toll is nearing 700,000, according to Johns Hopkins University's tally. The US continues to be the hardest hit nation followed by Brazil and India.

At least 141 vaccine candidates are being studied globally, of which 26 are in different phases of clinical trials.

Coronavirus cases cross 1.5 lakh mark in Karnataka

Karnataka on Wednesday crossed the grim milestone of 1.5 lakh Covid-19 cases, reporting 5,619 infections, while 100 deaths took the toll to 2,804.

The day also saw 5,407 patients getting discharged after recovery, a health department bulletin said.

Of the 5,619 fresh cases, 1,848 were from Bengaluru Urban district.

Recoveries at 74,679 surpassed active cases, which stood at 73,958, it said.

Disha Patani's father, 2 officers test Covid-19 positive

Three officers of the vigilance unit of the Uttar Pradesh power department, including the father of Bollywood actress Disha Patani, have tested positive for coronavirus.

Jagdish Patani and the two other officers, who came here from Lucknow, have tested positive for Covid-19, Additional CMO Ashok Kumar said on Wednesday.The three officers were investigating a transformer scam, he said.
