According to the Union health ministry's dashboard, India on Thursday logged 95,735 cases and 1,172 deaths due to the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19), which pushed the tally and death toll to 4,465,863 and 75,062 respectively. Active cases have climbed to 919,018 while over 3.47 million people have recovered so far.

Maharashtra continues to be worst hit from the pandemic. The state has logged over 943,000 Covid-19 cases after 23,816 cases were added in the last 24 hours. Mumbai, where the case curve had flattened in August, has seen a sudden surge in cases since the beginning of September. The city has reported an average of 1,691 cases every day so far this month, while in August it had recorded an average of 983 daily cases.

Meanwhile, Delhi on Wednesday logged its highest ever single-day spike of 4,093 cases which took the tally to over 200,000. A total of 54,517 samples were tested for Covid-19 on Wednesday. Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal ordered heads of all private labs in the state against denying anyone a Covid-19 test.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced fresh restrictions on social gatherings in view of the sudden surge in cases. He said groups of more than six people would be banned from meeting, in what he called a “rule of six”. UK reported 2,659 confirmed new cases earlier on Wednesday, up from 2,460 on Tuesday.

35,816 fresh cases push Brazil's Covid-19 tally to over 4.19 million

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Brazil has increased by 35,816 to 4,197,889 within the past 24 hours, the national Ministry of Health said on late Wednesday. The death toll has risen by 1,075 to 128,539 people within the same period of time, reports ANI.
