Elaborate arrangements made for counting
Results for Uttarakhand panchayat elections will be declared on Monday, October 21. Counting of votes will begin at 8 am and continue till the completion of the process.
Elections were held in the state's 12 districts except Haridwar in three phases. Nearly 30 lakh voters cast their votes in over 7,000 gram panchayats on October 5, 11 and 16.
Overall 69% voting was recorded, according to official records.
This time many seats for posts of gram pradhan, member gram panchayat, member zila panchayat and member kshetra panchayat remained uncontested.
Official records show that of the total 21,504 reserved posts, 852 posts for Scheduled Tribe, 7855 posts for Scheduled Caste and 867 posts for Other Backward Classes remained uncontested. Over 18000 posts reserved for women candidates in the state also remained uncontested. The election commission will conduct by-elections for these vacant seats within a month’s time as otherwise panchayat governance will be affected due to the non-formation of gram sabhas.
Here are the live updates:
Counting for panchayat polls begin
Counting for the three-phase panchayat elections in Uttarakhand begins.
Ballot papers mistakenly put in wrong boxes to be counted
According to the Election Commission, ballot papers mistakenly put in the wrong boxes will also be counted. The commission’s decision follows incidents of confusion among voters due to presence of two ballot boxes in every booth aimed to collect votes cast for Panchayat heads and members and heads of Block Development Committees (BDC) separately. Final results for every seat will only be declared after votes from both the ballot boxes have been counted and reconciled.
Over 15,000 candidates from 2014 polls debarred this time
The Election Commission had debarred 15,338 candidates from the 2014 Panchayat elections from contesting this time for failing to file details of election expenses in time.
Panchayat elections can be check online
Results of panchayat elections can be checked online on the lines of urban local body elections. A mobile application ‘UK Panchayat 2019’ has been developed where one can see the election results and updates on real-time basis. This application can be downloaded from the playstore.
