Kerala crash updates:Toll at 20, survivors say brave pilot averted major tragedy

An Air India Express flight with 191 passengers on board en route from Dubai skidded off the runway while landing at Kerala’s Kozhikode on Friday evening. Preliminary images from the accident site showed the aircraft split into two pieces with debris all over the runway. There were 10 infants on board the Air India Express flight that skidded off the Karipur runway while landing, Air India said.

People rushed to the spot and retrieved passengers before help came in. Though it was an evacuation plane they entered the flight ignoring smoke and minor fire and retrieved all aboard.

Air India (AI) Express pilots, who have died in Kerala plane crash tragedy, attempted two landings before the final landing at the tabletop runway at Kozhikode on Friday evening. Two landings were aborted by pilots due to tailwind. "According to weather radar, approach was for runway 28 but as pilots found difficulties they went around twice and came from the opposite side on runway 10 and the plane crash-landed at Kerala's Kozhikode airport," a senior investigator from DGCA said, reports ANI.

Evacuation completed, says Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted that the evacuation process has been completed. He said that Malappuram collector has informed that the rescue operations at the site have been completed. Air india flight AXB1344 (@DXB to CCJ) had 190 passengers. Vijayan added that all have been transferred to hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode.
