After a debate that lasted over 6 hours, Rajya Sabha on Wednesday cleared the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill piloted by Home Minister Amit Shah.
Since 12 pm, 44 lawmakers from different parties shared their stand on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
In the 245-member Rajya Sabha, 125 people voted in support of the bill, whereas 105 people voted against it.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 (CAB) was moved in the Rajya Sabha by the Union home minister Amit Shah.
As the debate concluded, Amit Shah addressed Rajya Sabha and answered to questions raised by the members in the house before the voting on the Bill began.
The bill had an easy passage in the Lok Sabha where the BJP-led NDA has majority. The Lower House passed the bill 334-106 after a fierce day-long debate on Monday.
There have been wide-spread protests against the bill in the northeast including Assam and Tripura.

Ahead of the CAB being tabled in the Upper House, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the bill "attempt by Modi-Shah govt to ethnically cleanse the North East."
In a tweet, the Wayanad LS Member of Parliament said, "The CAB is a attempt by Modi-Shah Govt to ethnically cleanse the North East. It is a criminal attack on the North East, their way of life and the idea of India.
I stand in solidarity with the people of the North East and am at their service."

'We have to clear doubts on this bill': Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut
Talking to reporters about the Citizenship Bill outside the Parliament, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said, "We have to clear our doubts on this bill. If we don't get satisfactory answers, then our stand could be different from what we took in Lok Sabha."
Raut also said that the bill has nothing for Tamil Hindus from Sri Lanka. "Votebank politics should not be played, its not correct. Don't attempt to create a Hindu-Muslim divide again. Also nothing in this bill for Tamil Hindus of Sri Lanka."

Rajya Sabha adjourned till 12 noon following uproar by Telugu Desam Party and other opposition parties over delay in release of GST payments to states.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, is scheduled to be tabled in the Upper House at 12 noon.

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, after BJP parliamentary party meeting, told reporters, "PM Modi asked all MPs to take suggestions of farmers, traders and businessmen in their respective constituencies and give that feedback to Finance Minister."
