Power likely to be restored in an hour, say officials
On Monday at around 10 am Mumbai witnessed a major power outage due to grid failure. Power supply was affected in neighbouring regions of Thane, Navi Mumbai and other areas belonging to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Local trains came to a halt with Western and Central Railway suspending their services.
Schools across the city cancelled their classes, exams and other events owing to power outage and those working from home faced issues due to non-availability of internet. Hospitals especially those catering to coronavirus (Covid-19) patients were surviving on power back up. In view of this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) directed all hospitals in the city to get diesel supply for at least eight hours to ensure there is not power cut.
After nearly 2.5 hours, power was restored city's western suburbs and neighbouring regions such as Thane and Mulund. Maharashtra energy minister Nitin Raut said that power supply to railways has been restored. Western and Central Railway both resumed their train services accordingly.
Meanwhile, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray took note of the incident by announcing a probe and further asked officials to provide alternative arrangements and ensure that people do not face any kind of hardship.
