India’s case count of coronavirus (Covid-19) infections reached 8,088,851 on Friday after 48,648 infections in last 24 hours. Earlier, on Thursday, the country's tally went past the eight million mark with 49,881 cases in the preceding 24 hours, as per the Union health ministry’s data. India is only the second country after the United States to log more than eight million Covid-19 cases.

Also on Thursday, Delhi logged its highest daily infections for third straight day, as well as over 5,000 cases for second day running. With 5,739 new cases, the national capital’s tally has risen to 375,753. On Tuesday and Wednesday, it had logged 4,853 and 5,673 cases respectively. Earlier in the day, Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain said one should wait for at least a week to say definitively that third wave of Covid-19 has arrived in the capital. He, however, added that it is possible third phase has already arrived.

3,589 new Covid-19 cases in Karnataka in 24 hours
Karnataka reported 3,589 new Covid-19 cases on Friday. The number of active cases in the state now stands at 59,499. The death toll reached 11,140 after 49 people lost their lives to the viral disease, state health department said.
Punjab reports 433 new cases, 19 deaths
As many as 433 new Covid-19 cases, and 19 deaths were reported in Punjab in the last 24 hours, the state health department said on Friday. The total number of infections in the state now stands at 1,33,158. The death toll is at 4,187.
In highest spike so far, Delhi reports 5,891 fresh cases
In another highest single day spike, Delhi on Friday reported 5,891 fresh cases of Covid-19. While 47 others succumbed to the disease, pushing the toll to 6,470.
Seven new Covid-19 cases reported in Dharavi
The tally of coronavirus cases in the slum-dominated Dharavi area of Mumbai increased to 3,543 with seven new cases coming to light on Friday, a senior civic official said.
Of these, 3,101 patients have already recovered and have been discharged from hospitals and Dharavi currently has only 133 active cases, he said.
Spread over 2.5 square kilometres and having a population of over 6.5 lakh, Dharavi is considered as the largest slum in Asia.

Maharashtra reports 6,190 new Covid-19 cases, 8,241 recoveries and 127 deaths, as per state's public health department.
The Covid-19 tally of the state rises to 16,72,858, with 15,03,050 recoveries and 43,837 deaths. Active cases at 1,25,418.

Among the worst affected states of India, Kerala on Friday reported 6,638 new Covid-19 infections and 7,928 recoveries. There are 90,565 active patients in the state and total deaths are 1,457.

Andhra Pradesh on Friday reported 2,886 new Covid-19 cases taking total positive cases in the State to 8,20,565. There are 25,514 active cases and 7,88,375 recovered cases in the State; the death toll is at 6,676, as per state health department.
38 new cases push in Mizoram; tally reaches 2,694
Mizoram's Covid-19 tally rose to 2,694 on Friday as 38 more people, including a three-year-old girl, tested positive for the infection. Three security personnel, nine children and an elderly couple are among the new patients.

Russia witnesses new record spike of 18,283 cases
