Globally, more than 61 million people have contracted coronavirus, while more than 1.4 million lives have been lost due to it, as per a worldometers tally. The United States, India, Brazil, Russia and France, in that order, are the five worst-hit countries.

India's caseload of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) stands at 9,266,706 after 44,489 infections were registered between Wednesday and Thursday, according to data released by the Union health ministry. On Saturday, prime minister Narendra Modi, who earlier this week chaired a meet with states over the Covid-19 situation and to discuss distribution plan of a potential Covid-19 vaccine, will visit vaccine development centres in Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad.

PM Modi will visit Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) and Hyderabad's Bharat Biotech International Limited. Meanwhile, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala remain the five worst-hit states. Delhi, which has been the epicentre of India's recent Covid-19 surge, is at sixth. On Thursday, the Delhi high court directed the Delhi government to take a decision immediately on night curfew and implement it "without delay."

1,526 new Covid-19 cases, 12 deaths in Karnataka

Karnataka reported 1,526 new cases of Covid-19 and 12 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 8,81,086 and the toll to 11,738 on Friday, the health department said. The day also saw 1,451 patients getting discharged after recovery while the active cases touched 25,379.

Covid cases cross 73,000 mark in Uttarakhand, death toll of Covid-19 positive patients crosses 1200

Uttarakhand reported 530 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the state tally to 73,527. Five more Covid-19 positive patients also died in the state, taking the death toll to 1201. Out of 73,527 who have been tested positive so far, a total of 66,855 have recovered successfully, taking the recovery rate in the state to 90.93 %. The positivity rate in the state now stands at 5.65%.

Manipur imposes night curfew till December 31 to check Covid spread

The Manipur government has imposed a night curfew from 6pm to 4am till the end of this year in the state to control the spread of coronavirus. The state chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar issued an order in this regard on Friday.

"There will be night curfew from 6pm to 4am and District Magistrates will issue orders in this regard," says the order.


Movement of essential services, good trucks and officials on duty shall be exempted. The order will remain in force upto December 31, 2020 or until further orders, it stated. Though hospitals, nursing home, clinics, dispensaries and all chemists and pharmacies shall be exempt from curfew restrictions, it said that social and customary ceremonies shall be organised for family only and in case some other persons are required to attend the ceremony/function, the size of the gathering shall be restricted to 20 or less persons.

29 more Covid-19 deaths, 2,135 new cases in Haryana

Haryana reported 29 more fatalities linked to the coronavirus, bringing the death toll to 2,345, while 2,135 fresh cases pushed the state's infection tally to 2,28,746, according to a bulletin.

According to the state health department's daily bulletin, the fatalities included five from Faridabad and four each from Gurugram and Rohtak districts and three each from Hisar and Fatehabad districts.

Nearly 4,000 fresh Covid-19 cases in Kerala push tally to 5.87 lakh

Kerala's Covid-19 tally touched 5,87,707 on Friday with the addition of 3,966 fresh cases while the toll rose to 2,171 with 23 deaths. A total of 4,544 people recovered from the disease, taking the total number of those cured in the state to 5,21,522, state Health Minister K K Shailaja said.

Maharashtra: Existing lockdown restrictions extended till Dec 31

The Maharashtra government on Friday extended the lockdown on account of coronavirus in the state till the midnight of December 31, 2020, an official release said. In the last couple of months, the government has eased several lockdown restrictions.

Revised guidelines have been issued from time to time by, allowing resumption of various activities as part of the "Mission Begin Again", the release said. Earlier this week, the government allowed reopening of places of worship. Schools for students from Std 9th to 12th have also reopened in some parts of the state this week. Hotels and bars have been already allowed to reopen.

Goa's Covid-19 tally rises by 150, toll reaches 686

Goa's coronavirus caseload went up by 150 and reached 47,491 on Friday, while the toll increased by one to touch 686, an official said. The number of people who have recovered reached 45,492 after 152 people were discharged during the day, leaving the state with 1,313 active cases, he added. A total of 2,645 samples were tested during the day, he added.

ICMR gives nod for CCMB's dry swab testing for Covid-19

The Indian Council of Medical Research has approved a dry swab RNA- extraction-free testing method for the Covid-19 virus developed by CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, CCMB said here on Friday. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is an important macromolecule that is present in all biological cells.


In the conventional testing method, nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swab samples collected by sample collection centres are transported to testing centres, sometimes even hundreds of kilometres away. The samples are generally placed in a liquid called Viral Transport Medium (VTM). To avoid leakage, they are packed heavily that adds on to sample processing times at both the sample collection and testing centres. Despite this, there are leakages from samples, which render those batches untestable and unsafe in handling.

All courts, except those in Pune, to reopen in Maharashtra

All courts in Maharashtra except for courts in Pune will resume their regular functions from the next months in two shifts as per the new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) released on Friday. The Bombay High Court on Friday released new SOP for all the courts except for the courts in Pune judicial district, whereby it is said that all the courts shall start regular functioning with effect from December 1 in two shifts, which would be of two and a half hours - from 11.00 am to 1.30 pm and from 2.00 pm to 4.30 pm.

3,093 new Covid-19 cases in Rajasthan, 18 deaths reported

Rajasthan recorded 18 more fatalities due to the coronavirus on Friday, taking the Covid-19 death toll in the state to 2,255. The state reported 3,093 new cases. The total numbers of people infected by Covid-19 have reached at 2,60,040 in Rajasthan and out of these 28,183 are active cases.

32 new Covid-19 cases in Tripura, tally rises to 32,610

At least 32 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Tripura on Friday, pushing the state's tally to 32,610, a health department official said.

Altogether 367 people have succumbed to the infection so far. West Tripura district, of which state capital Agartala is a part, has accounted for 185 of the 367 COVID-19 deaths. Tripura currently has 744 active coronavirus cases, while 31,476 people have recovered from the disease.

AstraZeneca CEO expects to run new global trial of Covid-19 vaccine: Bloomberg

AstraZeneca is likely to run an additional global trial to assess the efficacy of its Covid-19 vaccine using a lower dosage, its chief executive was quoted as saying on Thursday amid questions over the results of its late-stage study. Instead of adding the trial to an ongoing U.S. process, AstraZeneca might launch a fresh study to evaluate a lower dosage of its vaccine that performed better than a full dosage, Pascal Soriot told Bloomberg News.
