On Sunday, India’s wait for a vaccine for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) came to an end as the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) announced it had given approval for use in emergency cases of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca and Bharat Biotech’s vaccines. While Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) will manufacture Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield, Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is the country’s first indigenous vaccine against Covid-19. A third vaccine candidate, ZyCoV-D of Ahmedabad-based Zydus Cadila, was given the nod for phase 3 trials.
