Hathras case highlights: Determined to punish culprits harshly, says UP CM

UP BJP MLA from Ballia Surendra Singh said that parents who have daughters should emphasize upon imparting good values. He said these incidents can be curbed if the government and people work together. He said harsh punishments might not deter people from committing such acts again.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath said the state government is seeking an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation for a probe into all aspects linked to the Hathras episode.

“We are determined to ensure the harshest punishment for all those responsible for this incident,” he tweeted in Hindi.

Left and Congress activists protested in Kolkata on Saturday against the alleged gang rape of a Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras that has triggered a nationwide outrage.

Carrying placards having slogans such as "Defeat fascist BJP at Centre and TMC in Bengal" and "Down with fascists who throttle democracy", around a 1,000 members of the CPI(M), Congress and their affiliates marched from Moulali to Esplanade in the heart of the city in the afternoon.

Samajwadi Party workers, including its youth wing vice president Gaurav Jain and district media in-charge Sajid Hasan, were booked for violation of prohibitory orders in Civil Lines area, police said on Saturday.

The SIT will look into all issues raised by the family of the 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras, and the strictest action will be taken against the culprits, Uttar Pradesh Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Awanish Awasthi, said on Saturday after meeting the victim's kin.

Talking to media after two days, the 19-year-old victim's family questioned hurried cremation by the government. "We want to know whose body was burnt on that day. And if it was our sister's body then why did they burn her (the body) in this manner? All of us requested the police and the administration to allow us to see her one last time," said the victim's brother after the media was allowed in the village and to speak with the victim's family.
