Highlights: Delhi records highest-ever spike of 7,745 Covid-19 cases in 24 hours

With 50,356 new Covid-19 infections and 577 fatalities reported on Saturday, India's total cases tally has gone past the 8.4 million mark, with a total of 8,462,080 cases and 125,562 deaths. As per numbers released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India's active cases currently stand at 516,632. Overall recoveries count in India sustained steadily after reaching 7,819,886 which is 53,920 new recoveries on Saturday.

Only ten states in India are contributing for more than 80% of the new recoveries and 79% of the new infections in the country, as per data.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected state in India with 103,007 active cases and 44,965 deaths, as on Saturday. It is followed by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Delhi.

On the global front, the United States, again, continues to be the worst affected country with 116,780 cases reported in the last 24 hours. Hopes in the US now hinge on the new President elect Joe Biden, who has assured an action plan to control the coronavirus right from day-1. France had reported 60,235 cases in the same timeframe. Many countries in Europe are feeling the pinch of lockdowns again as infections keep rising across the continent.

Fresh Covid-19 cases take Rajasthan's tally to 2.11 lakh; death toll 1,989

A single-day rise of 1,872 Covid-19 cases took Rajasthan's tally of infection on Sunday to 2,11,310 while 10 more fatalities during the same period pushed the death toll to 1,989. Of the cases reported in the state so far, 16,376 were still under treatment. According to an official health bulletin, 1,92,945 people have been discharged after treatment till now, reports news agency PTI.

France Covid-19 deaths top 40,000

The total number of deaths in France from Covid-19 has topped 40,000 for the first time while the number of new cases hit a fresh record, health ministry data showed. New deaths from the disease reached 40,169, of which 27,660 have been in hospitals, including 306 in the last 24 hours, the ministry said in its daily report on the outbreak, reports news agency Reuters.

Argentina agrees deal for 22 million doses of AstraZeneca-Oxford Covid-19 vaccine

Argentina has struck a deal with drugmaker AstraZeneca Plc to receive around 22 million doses of its Covid-19 vaccine being developed with the University of Oxford, with the aim to start deliveries in the first half of next year. China's northern port city of Tianjin said on Sunday it plans to carry out tests on some cold storage facilities and their staff after a confirmed coronavirus case involving a worker who had handled frozen pork imported from Germany. Portugal will impose localised night-time curfews from Monday to contain the spread of the coronavirus as the number of cases reached a record high, Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced in the early hours of Sunday. "We cannot have the slightest doubt that everything must be done to contain the pandemic," Costa told a news conference. "If we fail to do so, we must increasingly adopt more restrictive measures and compromise the month of December," reports news agency Reuters.

Pakistan records over 1,500 new Covid cases for first time since July

Amid the second wave of the coronavirus outbreak in Pakistan, the number of new Covid-19 cases crossed the 1,500-mark for the first time since July, on Saturday. Citing National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Dawn reported that 1,543 people tested positive for the virus on Saturday. The total number of active cases in the country stands at 17,520, reports news agency ANI.
