The death toll in coronavirus and number of those infected from the virus around the world continued to rise. The global death toll has risen past 3,400 and tens of thousands have been infected with COVID-19.

With the Union health ministry confirming five new cases of novel coronavirus in Kerala on Sunday, the total number of those testing positive for the virus in India went up to 39.. Authorities have also decided to have dedicated aero bridges at airports for flights from USA, Spain and France in view of the rising number of cases of COVID-19 in these countries. This is in addition to the 12 countries already identified by the government earlier.

Meanwhile, the number of novel coronavirus cases in the world stood at 105,836, including 3,595 deaths, across 95 countries and territories on Sunday, according to a report compiled by AFP from official sources.

Iran reported 49 new deaths on Sunday, taking the total number of fatalities to 194. Italy, with the most number of deaths outside China, put a vast swathe of the norther region under lock down, cutting off over 15 million people from the rest of the country to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Bangladesh confirmed its first three cases of novel coronavirus.

Another coronavirus patient identified in Pakistan, total cases rise to six

A 50-year-old man tested positive for the deadly coronavirus in Pakistan on Sunday, taking the total number of the COVID-19 infections in the country to six, officials said. The new case was found in Karachi where the first patient of coronavirus recovered on Saturday and was sent home from hospital, reports PTI.

Public functions in Kerala's Pathanamthitta cancelled till further notice

All public functions in Kerala's Pathanamthitta have been cancelled till a further notice after five new cases of novel coronavirus were reported from the district on Sunday. Three of these five people had returned from Italy last month and two others were infected after they came into contact with them.

Schools in the district will remain closed for at least three days and 24x7 call centres have been opened in all districts of the the state which had reported the first three cases of COVID-19 in the country. These measures were taken after a high-level meeting chaired by Health Minister K K Shailaja.

Alitalia suspends flights to and from Milan's Malpensa airport after lock down

Alitalia airlines said on Sunday it was suspending national and international flights to and from Milan's Malpensa airport from March 9 after the government ordered a lock down of large areas of northern Italy to stem coronavirus contagion.

In a statement, the Italian flag carrier said it would operate only national flights from the smaller Milan Linate airport, and reduce the number of flights between Venice and Rome.

International routes will be served from Rome's Fiumicino airport. The new regime will continue until at least April 3, the airline said.

400 quarantined in Assam after coming in contact with US tourist who tested positive for COVID-19

At least 400 people in Assam have been quarantined after they came in contact with an American tourist who tested positive for the new coronavirus in Bhutan after travelling through the state recently.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, Assam's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said tests for five persons have been done so far and results have come negative.

"State Health Dept has traced more than 400 contacts in different places including MV Mahabahu (cruise ship) and resorts where he stayed. Teams of doctors and microbiologists have been keeping a close watch on these people who have been quarantined," he tweeted.

A 76-year-old American tourist tested positive for COVID-19 in Bhutan, the first such case in the country, after travelling through Assam recently.

Germany calls for cancelling events with more than 1,000 participants

Germany on Sunday called for cancellation of large events and preparing measures to prop up the sputtering economy as coronavirus cases in Europe's biggest economy reached close to 850.

German health minister Jens Spahn took to Twitter and said gatherings of more than 1,000 participants should be scrapped.

"After many discussions with those responsible, I emphatically encourage the cancellation of events with more than 1,000 participants until further notice," Jens Spahn, the government's point man on coordinating action to contain contagion, said.

IMA appeals Thane citizens people to not rush for masks

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Sunday asked citizens of Thane in Maharashtra not to panic and rush to buy masks in view of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Addressing an awareness programme, Dr Vedhas Nimkar, Joint Secretary of IMA's Thane Chapter, said only those people who are advised to use masks by doctors should use them.

Airports in India will now have dedicated aero bridges for flights from USA, Spain and France in view of the rising cases of coronavirus in these countries. Special secretary (health) said on Sunday that separate aero bridges for these three countries will be in addition to the 12 nations listed earlier by the government.
