Covid-19 highlights: India reports 437 cases in 24 hours, 1834 people infected

The number of novel coronavirus cases in India rose to 1,834, according to the figures released by the Union health ministry. The US death toll, which has now touched 3,400, is more than the nearly 3,000 people killed in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Close to 175,000 have been infected across the US.

Covid-19 highlights: India reports 437 cases in 24 hours, 1834 people infected

The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 800,000 people all over the world, with the global death toll crossing 40,000. The total number of deaths in the US with the 3,400 deaths from Covid-19 has surpassed China’s official toll of 3,305. Close to 175,000 have been infected across the United States. The US, Italy, Spain, China and Germany are now the five most affected countries in terms of number of confirmed cases.

In India, too, the number of novel coronavirus cases continue to climb. According to the Union health ministry, there are 1,834 Covid-19 patients in the country which 41 deaths.

No new case of Covid-19 in Rajasthan, as of 9 am today, according to the state health deptartment, reports ANI.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the state still stands at 93, including 2 Italians and 17 evacuees from Iran. Out of those 93 people, 14 tested negative later while 5 have been discharged.

"We are facing a global health crisis unlike any in the 75-year history of the United Nations — one that is killing people, spreading human suffering, and upending people's lives. But this is much more than a health crisis. It is a human crisis," Guterres said at the virtual launch of the report.

Later, in response to a question on why he thinks the pandemic is the worst global crisis since the UN was founded, Guterres said "because it is a combination, on one hand, of a disease that represents a threat to everybody in the world and, second, because it has an economic impact that will bring a recession that probably has no parallel in the recent past."

18 new cases in Maharashtra, total count rises to 320: Report

Maharashtra reported 18 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, taking the total count in the state to 320, a health official said, reports PTI. Of the 18 new cases, 16 have been reported from Mumbai and two from Pune, he said.

The health official was also quoted as saying that the death toll in the state has risen to 12 in the state.

Japan on brink of emergency as coronavirus spreads: Govt Spokesperson

Japan remains on the brink of a state of emergency as the rate of coronavirus infections continues to increase in the country, its top government spokesman said on Wednesday, reports Reuters.

US Navy captain says carrier faces dire coronavirus threat

The captain of the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt told the Pentagon that new coronavirus is spreading uncontrollably through his ship and called for immediate help to quarantine its crew, reports AFP.

But Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Tuesday ruled out evacuating the ship, whose plight bears similarities to that on civilian cruise ships where the COVID-19 illness spread.

Captain Brett Crozier wrote in a four-page letter that they had not been able to stem the spread of COVID-19 through the 4,000 crewmembers, describing a dire situation aboard the vessel now docked at Guam, a US territory in the Pacific.

"We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die," Crozier wrote, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, which published a copy of the letter on Tuesday.

Trump warns Americans of a tough two weeks ahead in coronavirus fight

President Donald Trump and his top healthcare advisers have urged Americans to follow strict social distancing measures ahead of a "tough two weeks" that could lead to at least 100,000 deaths from the coronavirus in the United States, reports Reuters.

"It's absolutely critical for the American people to follow the guidelines for the next 30 days. It's a matter of life and death," Trump said during a news conference at the White House on Tuesday.

Trump said the next two weeks would be "very, very painful."

"We want Americans to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead," Trump said, predicting light at the end of the tunnel after that.
