Highlights: Maharashtra reports 8,240 new Covid-19 cases, tally past 3.18 L

The death toll due to Covid-19 surpassed 140,000 in the United States while the number of infections continued increase every day in the country.

In the Asian region as well, the situation was grim as countries saw a resurgence of cases forcing authorities to reimpose various social restrictions.

In record high, Hong Kong detected more than 100 cases of Covid-19 while authorities mulled an extension in the mandatory wearing of masks.

Meanwhile, in China, Xinjiang province saw a spike in the Covid-19 cases while authorities in Beijing lowered its response level after two weeks of no new domestic infection.

India, the third worst-hit nation by the pandemic after the United States and Brazil, has been recording a record high on a daily basis. The number of Covid-19 infection currently stands at 118,042. While 681 other succumbed to the disease, pushing death toll to 27,497, as per the latest data published on health ministry's site.

Outbreak in northwest China spreads to second city

China’s latest coronavirus outbreak has spread to a second city in the northwestern region of Xinjiang, Associated Press reported on Monday.

One of the 17 new cases reported on Monday was in the ancient Silk Road city of Kashgar, the regional government said on its official microblog. The remainder were in the regional capital of Urumqi, where all other cases have been reported since the outbreak that has now infected at least 47 people emerged earlier this month.
