According to the Union health ministry's dashboard, India on Tuesday logged 75,809 cases and 1,133 deaths due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) disease, which pushed the overall tally and death toll to 4,280,422 and 72,775 respectively. The active cases have climbed to 883,697 whereas over 3.3 million have recovered from Covid-19 so far.
India has overtaken Brazil to become the nation with the second-highest number of Covid-19 cases. Brazil, which now stands at third position, has over 4.1 million cases whereas United States which continues to be worst hit from the pandemic has over 6.4 million cases.

Maharashtra, which is one of the worst affected states, constitutes one-fourth of India’s active cases. More than 126,000 cases and 2,205 deaths were recorded in a just a period of seven days. State health minister Rajesh Tope attributed this surge in infections due to unlocking.
