Amid surge in Covid-19 cases, oxygen plants in Gujarat asked to ramp up production
India on Saturday registered 97,570 cases and 1,201 deaths due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) disease which pushed the country's tally and death toll to 4,659,984 and 77,472 respectively, according to the Union health ministry's dasboard. The active cases have climbed to 958,316 whereas over 3.6 million people have recovered from the disease so far.
The ministry on Friday added that around 57% of the new infections are being reported from five states with Maharashtra contributing the maximum to the caseload. Maharashtra is now the first and only state globally to have reported over a million Covid-19 cases in total. Many districts in the state have acute shortage of beds in intensive care units (ICU) and other essentials, including drugs and oxygen.
The ministry pointed out that Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka contributed over 48% of the total active cases in country.

French PM to end self-isolation after another negative Covid test
French Prime Minister Jean Castex has tested negative for Covid-19 again and will come out of self-isolation on Saturday, a week after being in contact with someone who had a positive result, his office said, reports Reuters.

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 22,084 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total count of infections to 1,037,765, state health department said. A total of 13,489 patients were discharged after treatment in the day, raising the number of recoveries to 728,512, reports PTI.
Karnataka logs 9,140 new Covid-19 cases, 94 deaths in last 24 hours
Karnataka's Covid-19 tally climbed to 449,551 after 9,140 new cases, 94 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The total cases include 97,815 active cases and 344,556 discharges, the state's health department said, reports ANI.

Shillong declares three areas as containment zones
The district administration has declared three areas in Shillong as containment zones to allow health officials to detect coronavirus cases and map all influenza like infection (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) to arrest the surge of deaths linked to Covid-19 , officials said, reports PTI.

Amid surge in Covid-19 cases, oxygen plants in Gujarat asked to ramp up production
In view of the rise in coronavirus cases in Gujarat, the state health department has directed oxygen manufacturing units to ramp up production to maximum capacity and ensure that 50 per cent of the oxygen is meant for hospitals, reports PTI.
