According to the union health ministry’s dashboard, India on Tuesday logged 69,921 new cases, 819 deaths due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, which has taken the overall tally to nearly 3.7 million. The total cases include 785,996 active cases, over 2.83 million recoveries and 65,288 deaths.
India on Sunday registered 78,761 cases, the highest ever across the globe. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that over 4.33 crore samples have been tested for Covid-19 so far out of which 10,16, 920 samples were tested on Monday.
India’s GDP contracted by almost 24% in from April-June in 2020 as compared to 2019. This indicates that the Covid-19 lockdown during the initial months took a severe toll on economic activity. India observed a hard lockdown during the initial months of the outbreak in April and May. According to experts, lockdown was not a problem but what made matters worse was the way in which it was implemented.
India stands as the third worst-affected nation from the Covid-19 pandemic. The United States, which is the worst affected topped six million cases on Monday, adding a million infections in three weeks. The country had recorded its five millionth case on August 9, which was just 17 days after it hit four million.

Haryana adds nearly 30,000 Covid-19 cases in August
With coronavirus infections witnessing a spike in many northern districts, Haryana added nearly 30,000 patients to its Covid-19 tally, a jump of 85 per cent, during August, an analysis of data provided by the state government shows.
On July 31, the total number of cases in the state was 34,965 which soared to 64,732 by August 31, the day which also saw the highest single-day spike of 1,450 cases.
5,928 new Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu
As many as 5,928 new Covid-19 cases, 6,031 discharges and 96 deaths reported in Tamil Nadu today. Total number of cases now at 4,33,969 including 52,379 active cases, 3,74,172 discharges and 7,418 deaths, said state health department.
5,571 fresh cases push UP tally to 2,35,757
Fifty-six more people died of coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, raising the toll to 3,542, while 5,571 fresh cases pushed the state’s infection count to 2,35,757, an official said.
Briefing reporters here, Additional Chief Secretary Medical and Health Amit Mohan Prasad said a total of 1,49,874 samples were tested for Covid-19 in the state on Monday.
