Coronavirus Highlights: Italy reports 475 new virus deaths, highest one-day toll of any nation

The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 197,000 people and killed more than 7,900 around the world. India has reported three Covid-19 deaths,151 active cases and 14 cured patients so far.

As the novel coronavirus continues to spread around the world, countries are closing their borders, imposing travel restrictions and struggling to keep their economies afloat. The pandemic has infected more than 2,00,000 people and killed more than 8,000, according to Associated Press.

India reported its third casualty from Covid-19 on Tuesday following the death of a 64-year-old patient at Mumbai’s Kasturba hospital. So far, there are 130 active coronavirus cases in the country while 14 patients have been cured of the disease and discharged, taking the total number to 147.

A hundred people have died from the new coronavirus in the United States, according to an AFP count using figures provided by state and county websites and officials.

Burkina Faso reports first virus death in sub-Saharan Africa

The Sahel state of Burkina Faso on Wednesday announced its first death from coronavirus, which is also the first known fatality in sub-Saharan Africa.

"We recorded the death overnight of a female patient aged 62, who suffered from diabetes and was in intensive care," Burkina's national coordinator for responding to the virus, Professor Martial Ouedraogo, told the press.

Iran's Rouhani defends virus response despite no lockdown

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday defended the response to the new coronavirus outbreak by his administration, which has yet to impose a lockdown to stop the disease spreading.

Rouhani's government says the virus has killed 1,135 people and infected 17,161 others in the month since it first emerged in the Islamic republic.

"Some ask why the government isn't intervening, but I think we have intervened significantly," the president said on Wednesday.

"Great things have been done (including) measures no other country has taken," he said in televised remarks after a weekly meeting of his cabinet.

Iran reports another spike in coronavirus with 147 deaths

Iran says the new coronavirus has killed 147 more people, a nearly 15% spike that raises the death toll to 1,135 people amid 17,361 infections in the country.

That is the biggest 24-hour rise in deaths yet recorded by Iran's Health Ministry since the virus first appeared in Iran in mid-February. Iran’s deputy health minister, Alireza Raisi, announced the new tolls at a televized press conference on Wednesday.

Sensex plummets over 1,200 pts; Nifty below 8,700

Equity benchmark Sensex plunged over 1,200 points in afternoon session on Wednesday as global markets failed to hold on to early gains and resumed their downward spiral.

The rupee too receded from morning highs depreciating 5 paise to 74.29 against US dollar.

Investor gloom returned despite signals of massive stimulus packages by federal governments, traders said. The BSE barometer oscillated over 1,600 points in a highly volatile session. It was trading 1,227.65 points or 4.01 per cent lower at 29,351.44 at 1230 hours.

Bengaluru reports 2 more coronavirus cases

Two more coronavirus cases reported from Bengaluru, Karanataka health minister B Sriramulu said on Wednesday on Twitter.

"2 more Covid19 cases have been registered in Bangalore today, taking the total infected cases to 13. 56yr old male, resident of Bangalore returned from USA on 6th March. Another, 25 yr old female, who has returned from Spain. Both are admitted in designated isolated hospital," the tweet said.

Some US embassies suspend routine visa services over coronavirus

A number of U.S. embassies around the world will suspend routine visa services due to coronavirus precautions, the U.S. Embassy in South Korea said on Wednesday.

The suspension will affect visa services at embassies in countries with a U.S. State Department travel advisory level of 2, 3, or 4, the statement said.

According to the U.S. State Department website, as of Wednesday that includes around 100 countries.

SC judge asks senior lawyers to come to court with only one advocate

Supreme Court justice MR Shah told senior advocate Aryman Sundaram on Wednesday to come to the court with only advocate in view of the coronavirus outbreak, reports ANI.

"You all come with 5-6 advocates. This is a request to the Bar also, a senior advocate should only come with one advocate. This is ultimately for our sake," Justice Shah said.

Doctor at Lucknow's KGMU Hospital tests positive: Official

A doctor at Lucknow's King George’s Medical University (KGMU) tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, reports HT Correspondent. A resident doctor, he was working with the medical team attending to coronavirus positive and suspected patients.

“His sample tested positive for the virus while samples 14 other colleagues in the same team tested negative. The doctor who tested positive had collected samples of many patients,” said Dr Sudhir Singh spokesperson KGMU.

With this the number of cases in the state goes to 16.
