More than 9.5 million coronavirus cases have been recorded globally since the pandemic started. The pandemic which had brought the economy to a grinding halt has not receded and fresh waves of new infections threaten the reopening plans across several cities of US.

US and Mexico continue to report fresh cases in large numbers. US health officials also estimate that close to 20 million people might have been infected by Covid-19. Mexico’s Covid-19 deaths surged past 25,000. India recorded more than 15,000 cases for two days in a row.

1,297 new coronavirus cases in Mumbai, 117 deaths

With 1,297 new patients found, the coronavirus case tally in Mumbai rose to 72,287 on Friday and the death toll due to the pandemic reached 4,177 with 117 new fatalities, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

The number of recovered patients in the city reached 39,744 with 593 patients discharged from hospitals during the day.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Chhattisgarh increased to 2,545 after 89 more people, including seven Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, tested positive on Friday, a health official said.

Coronavirus cases cross 30,000-mark in Gujarat, 18 new deaths

With 580 new patients being detected since previous evening, the number of coronavirus cases in Gujarat crossed 30,000 on Friday, the health department said.

This is for the second time that a single-day highest increase of 580 was reported in the state.

Madhya Pradesh's Covid-19 count reaches 12,798; death toll mounts to 546

The Covid-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh reached 12,798 on Friday after 203 people tested coronavirus positive, while three deaths in Indore and another one in Dhar took the toll to 546, an official said.

A total of 185 persons were discharged from hospitals post recovery during the day, taking the number of recovered patients to 9,804, leaving the state with 2,448 active cases.

Community transmission has begun, says Goa's chief minister

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said community transmission of the novel coronavirus had begun as Covid-19 cases were coming from all parts of the state.

A total of 44 cases were detected during the day, taking the Covid-19 count to 1,039, while the number of active cases was 667, a health official said.

"We will have to admit that community transmission has begun in the state. But the infection has been traced to some common sources," Sawant said.

The World Health Organization-led coalition fighting the coronavirus needs $31.3 billion over the next 12 months to develop and roll out tests, treatments and vaccines, it said on Friday.
