The Covid-19 tally in India has crossed 3.95 lakh with maximum number of cases being reported from Maharashtra, followed by Tamil Nadu and Delhi. According to the Union health ministry’s dashboard on Saturday morning, the country witnessed a record spike of 14,516 fresh cases while the death toll mounted to 12,948.

Meanwhile, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has asked states to scale up Covid-19 testing capacity to enable early detection and containment of the infection.

On the global front, the number of people infected with coronavirus disease has gone up to 8,637,901, with the United States being the hardest hit with 2,219,119 cases, according to Johns Hopkins University’s tally. The global death toll has climbed over 4.59 lakh.

Maharashtra's coronavirus tally reaches 1,28,205

Maharashtra's single-day spike trend continued on Saturday as the state saw 3,874 new infections- highest single day spike- in the last 24 hours taking the case tally to 1,28,205. State death toll rose by 160 new fatalities reported on Saturday.

In Mumbai, 1190 fresh cases and 136 new deaths were reported. City’s case tally rose to 65,329 while death toll touched 3561.

Record 1,045 cases push Thane's tally past 20,000-mark

Thane district reported 1,045 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases on Saturday, a single day record, taking the count past the 20,000-mark to 20,565, while 27 deaths took the toll so far to 684, an official said.

1,197 new coronavirus cases in Mumbai, 136 deaths

1,197 new coronavirus patients were reported in Mumbai on Saturday, taking the total cases in the city to 65,265.

In grim news, the financial capital of the country also recorded 136 deaths due to the pandemic, which is the highest single-day figure, said a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) release.

The death toll in the city thus rose to 3,559, it said.

Out of 136 deaths, 75 deaths had occurred between June 16-19 and rest 61 before June 16, it said.

In light of the rise in Covid-19 cases, a 1,000-bed temporary hospital is being set up at Byculla here, a civic official said on Saturday.

The facility in the premises of Richardson and Cruddas Ltd will be ready by the end of the month, a release from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation stated.

One more Covid-19 patient died in Uttarakhand on Saturday, as the number of people testing positive for the infection rose to 2,278 with 101 fresh cases, a state health department bullentin said.

A 66-year-old woman, who had tested positive for Covid-19, died at Sushila Tiwari Hospital in Haldwani, it said.

Hope to start domestic flights at full capacity by year end, says minister

Civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the government would be ramping up domestic flight operations. "At present we have allowed only 33 per cent flights to operate and and flights are not operating in full capacity even now. We will open more routes where there is demand more," the minister said.

The government is willing to push it to even 40-50 per cent capacity if demand rises, Puri said.

US Embassy in Kabul battling Covid-19 infections

The Us State Department says Covid-19 infections have been reported at its embassy in the Afghan capital and the staff who are affected include diplomats, contractors and locally employed staff.

The State Department did not say how many were affected. An official at the embassy in Kabul, who could not be identified because of not being authorized to talk to the media, said as many as 20 people were infected, the majority of whom are Nepalese Gurkhas, who provide embassy security.
