Highlights: Human clinical trial of Covid-19 vaccine ‘Covaxin’ begins in Odisha

The much-awaited human clinical trial of indigenously developed Covaxin, a possible vaccine against novel coronavirus, began at an institute here on Monday, a senior official said. The human trial of BBV152 COVID-19 vaccine or Covaxin commenced at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital, one of the 12 centres selected by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for conducting phase one and two of the process, the official at the facility said.

Indonesia announced Monday that its confirmed coronavirus cases have surpassed 100,000, the highest amount in Southeast Asia.

Telangana's coronavirus tally crossed 55,000 after 1,473 more people tested positive for the infection. Active cases have reached 12,955 while the death toll stands at 471, reports PTI.

Amit Mohan Prasad, the principal health secretary of Uttar Pradesh said that 106,962 samples were tested for Covid-19 on Sunday and that no other state has tested so many samples in one single day, reports ANI.

A 72-hour lockdown started in Meghalaya’s state capital Shillong from Monday amid rising cases of novel coronavirus in the state, officials said. Around 30 localities, mostly in the worst-hit East Khasi Hills district, have already been declared containment zones, they said, reports PTI.

37 more people tested positive for coronavirus in Tripura, taking the total number of cases in the state to 3,920. The recoveries stand at 2,362, reports PTI.

As per the health ministry, 1,525 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Indonesia, taking the total number of cases in the country to 100,303. The ministry also reported 57 more deaths, bringing the death toll to 4,838. An increased number of recent virus transmissions have been linked to work places such as offices and factories, reports AP.

Hong Kong authorities reported 145 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, of which 142 were locally transmitted, setting a new daily high just hours after the city announced its toughest measures yet to curb a community outbreak, reports Reuters.

As many as 7,685 rapid antigen tests were conducted in Delhi today. A total of 9,58,283 tests have been conducted so far, according to Government of Delhi.
