India added 374,608 cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and 5,594 deaths in a week, pushing its tally to over 2.58 million, data from the Union health ministry showed on Sunday.
There were 63,490 Covid-19 cases and 944 deaths between Saturday and Sunday morning as the country has reported more than 60,000 infections for the ninth time in 10 days, according to the health ministry’s dashboard.
However, with the number of cases and death toll rising with each passing day, India continues to be ranked third in the number of infections — only the US and Brazil have recorded more cases than India and have substantially higher death tolls from the viral illness.

Russia produced the first batch of its new vaccine for Covid-19, hours after the health ministry reported the start of manufacturing. Russia said that the vaccine will be rolled out by the end of this month.

India must pay homage to Covid-19 warriors: Union minister Muraleedharan
As India celebrates its 74th Independence Day, the country must pay its regards to the multitude of Covid-19 warriors and frontline workers who have been working tirelessly to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, Union Minister V Muraleedharan said on Sunday, reports PTI.

Weekend lockdown is being implemented in some cities of Uttar Pradesh including Prayagraj. It will be in place till 5 am on August 17.

US, SKorea to begin scaled-down drills amid coronavirus spike
The United States and South Korea will begin their annual joint military exercises this week, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said Sunday. But a spreading coronavirus outbreak has apparently forced the allies to scale back an already low-key training program mainly involving computer-simulated war scenarios, reports AP.
The drills from Tuesday to Aug. 28 could still irk North Korea, which portrays the allies' training as invasion rehearsals and has threatened to abandon stalled nuclear talks if Washington persists with what it perceives as “hostile policies” toward Pyongyang.
South Africa lifts lockdown restrictions after Covid-19 infections fall
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Saturday that all indications were that South Africa had reached the peak of Covid-19 infections, as he announced a sweeping removal of lockdown restrictions on the economy, reports Reuters.
In a televised address, Ramaphosa said the government would end the ban on alcohol and tobacco, allow restaurants and taverns to return to normal business, subject to strict hygiene regulations, and remove the ban on travel between provinces.

India's Covid-19 tally has gone past the 2.58 million, according to the figures released by the Union health ministry on Sunday morning. There are 677,444 active cases, 1,862,258 discharged patients and 49,980 deaths in the country, taking the total number to 25,89,682.
Saudi Arabia plans distance learning for schools as precaution
Students at Saudi Arabia's public schools will be educated via distance learning as a precaution against coronavirus for the first seven weeks of the new term, which begins on Aug. 30, the minister of education said on Saturday, reports Reuters.
During that time the situation for the rest of the term will be evaluated, Dr. Hamad bin Mohammed Al Shaikh said in remarks carried on state-run al-Ekhbariya TV.
University and technical schools will be online for theory-based curriculums and in person for practical curriculums, he added.
China new local Covid-19 cases fall as Xinjiang cluster recedes
China's new locally transmitted cases of the novel coronavirus fell to a one-month low as a cluster in the western region of Xinjiang receded, data released by the country's health authority on Sunday showed, reports Reuters.
The number of locally transmitted cases in China dropped to four on August 15, all of which were in Xinjiang, the National Health Commission said in a statement. That compares with eight cases nationwide a day earlier, and is the lowest since July 16. As of Aug. 15, mainland China had 84,827 confirmed coronavirus cases.
Vaishno Devi yatra resumes after 5 months
Pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi Temple resumed on Sunday, nearly 5 months after it was suspended due to Covid-19, reports ANI. Only 2,000 people will be allowed to visit the shrine every day. The yatra to the shrine was suspended from March 18.
South Korea reports highest coronavirus jump since March
South Korea has reported 279 newly confirmed cases of the coronavirus, it's highest daily jump since early March, as fears grow about a massive outbreak in the greater capital region, reports news agency Associated Press.
The figures released by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Sunday brought the national caseload to 15,318, including 305 deaths.
The number of new cases was the highest since 367 were reported on March 8.
WHO team to assist South Africa in reinforcing Covid-19 response
A World Health Organisation (WHO) surge team will assist South Africa in bolstering its national Covid-19 response, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has said, reports PTI. The team comprises 43 members and 16 arrived in the country on Friday.
