Priyanka Gandhi joins citizenship protesters at India Gate

In Nadesar area of Varanasi, people are protesting against CAA after Friday prayers.

The situation is peaceful in Varanasi and Internet services have been suspended for few hours till evening, DM Kaushal Raj Sharma said.

Police mobilisation at Delhi Gate begins, personnel with lathis start pouring in.

Entry and exit gates of Jamia Millia Islamia metro station have also been closed, tweeted DMRC.

Police had tried to detain Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad, during protest at Jama Masjid against Citizenship Amendment Act but he was taken out of the spot by his supporters. He was earlier denied permission for a protest march from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar. : ANI

Entry and exit gates of Chawri Bazar, Lal Quila and Jama Masjid, Delhi Gate have been shut. Trains will not be halting at this station, tweeted Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Around 5,000 people have gathered at Jama Masjid to protest against the citizenship law.

Residents from Jama Masjid area have offered roses to senior police officers to show their cooperation with police and convey message of peace. Police say they too want to ensure peace, reported news agency PTI.

Delhi Police PRO, MS Randhawa also present at the spot to control and monitor the situation; asks people gathered at Jama Masjid, to peacefully disperse.

Carrying Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar's picture in one hand and a copy of Indian Constitution in the other, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad led the protests at Delhi's historical Jama Masjid. Locals protesting the anti-Citizenship protests have swarmed the vicinity of mosque.

Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad clarified the rumours surrounding his arrest and said that no attention should be paid to such reports. "I am reaching Jama Masjid," Chandrashekhar Azad said in a tweet.

In the light of call for protests at Jama Masjid, Delhi Police has increased the security in the area ahead of Friday prayers. The police is checking IDs and confirming names of people before allowing them to walk to Jama Masjid for Friday prayers. Those not carrying IDs are being asked to get the pictures forwarded on their phones.

Prohibitory orders were imposed in 12 police station areas of Northeast Delhi on Friday as police carried out a flag march in the district which witnessed violence during protests against the amended citizenship law three days ago, officials said.

The police also used drones to keep a tab on the law and order situation in the area.
