Maharashtra, Haryana Assembly Polls Result 2019: Key developments so far

BJP-led NDA seems all set to form government in Maharashtra, while possibility of a clear-cut majority in Haryana for any party seems to be a far cry. To form the government in Maharashtra, a party or alliance needs to win at least 145 seats, in Haryana majority mark can be reached by winning 46 seats.

To form the government in Maharashtra, a party or alliance needs to win at least 145 seats, in Haryana majority mark can be reached by winning 46 seats.

Counting of votes in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly polls and 90-member Haryana Assembly polls is in progress. BJP-led NDA seems all set to form government in Maharashtra, while possibility of a clear-cut majority in Haryana for any party seems to be a far cry. One can also say BJP has lost some ground in both Maharashtra and Haryana. At around 5 pm, BJP was leading on 159 seats, Congress was leading on 97 seats and Others were ahead on 32 seats in Maharashtra while in Haryana BJP was ahead on 39 seats, Congress on 33 seats and others were leading on 18 seats. To form the government in Maharashtra, a party or alliance needs to win at least 145 seats, in Haryana majority mark can be reached by winning 46 seats.

Here are some of the noteworthy developments of counting of votes in Maharashtra and Haryana assembly polls:


Maharashtra


#The counting started at 8am amid tight security in the state. The Mumbai BJP looked decorated ahead of counting showing that BJP was sure of victory in Maharashtra. Arrangements had been made for large screen on which live coverage of counting could be seen. An order for garlands and 5000 ‘laddus’ has been place, an official told PTI.

#Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Colaba candidate Rahul Narvekar said that the BJP-Shiv Sena combine in Maharashtra will win more than 220 out of 288 seats in Maharashtra assembly. Talking to ANI, Narvekar said, "BJP-Shiv Sena together will win more than 220 seats. There is a BJP wave all across India. We will win."

# Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis was leading over his Congress rival Ashish Deshmukh in Nagpur South West. Shiv Sena's Aaditya Thackeray is leading in the Worli assembly constituency.

#Congress spokesman Sachin Sawant on Thursday said his party's priority would be to keep the BJP "out of power" in Maharashtra. As counting of votes was underway, Sawant in a tweet said, "Congress' priority would be to keep BJP out of power." However, Congress' campaign committee member Sanjay Lakhe Patil criticised Sawant over his tweet. "This is political bankruptcy and foolishness. The Congress should stay away from such political suicide. Instead, the party should be a strong opposition force and win back the confidence of people," Lakhe Patil said in a post on his Facebook page. The Congress should hold the Fadnavis government "accountable" for the promises made during campaigning, he added.

#Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut says 'We agreed upon 50-50 formula'

“I am going to meet Uddhav Ji. Numbers aren’t that bad. Yes, we will definitely continue with the alliance. We have agreed upon a 50-50 formula,” ANI quoted Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut as saying.


Haryana


#As the counting of votes showed the Congress making major gains in Haryana on Thursday, party leader and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda told his cheering supporters that the party would get majority in the state. "Congress ka bahumat ayega (Congress will get majority)," said Hooda, as counting trends indicated that the ruling BJP may not cross the half way mark.


#After first round of counting, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was leading from Karnal assembly seat with 4588 votes. Khattar is seeking re-election from the Karnal assembly seat. According to Election Commission website, Khattar won the seat in 2014 by a margin of 63,773 votes.


#TikTok star and BJP candidate, Sonali Phogat on Thursday expressed confidence that BJP will win Adampur assembly constituency in Haryana. Phogat, who became famous with her TikTok videos, is contesting the assembly elections in Haryana on a BJP ticket from Adampur. She is up against senior Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi, a three-time sitting legislator from the constituency and son of former chief minister late Bhajan Lal.


#Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala said on Thursday that both BJP and Congress will not cross the 40 mark in the state and JJP will have the key of the State Assembly.


#As the counting of votes in Haryana assembly polls began on Thursday, wrestler and BJP candidate, Babita Phogat voiced confidence of winning from Dadri assembly constituency.


#The counting of nearly 1.24 crore ballots for the 90 Assembly seats of Haryana began on Thursday morning amidst tight security, electoral officials said.

Counting results at around 12 noon

At around 12 noon, BJP was leading on 165 seats, Congress was leading on 95 seats and Others were ahead on 28 seats in Maharashtra while in Haryana BJP was ahead on 39 seats, Congress on 32 seats and others were leading on 19 seats.
